Day 13: UPRM EEA-Juana Diaz
Today we went to the UPRM-EEA Juana Diaz Experimental Station. There we were given a brief tour and description of the experimental station. We also did field work experience in fruit grafting and had an inside view and tour of the "Long Distance Plant Disease Diagnostic Clinic"(LDPDDC).
So first thing was the basic description of the LDPDDC. Agro. Alberto Velez gave us a brief description of what goes down there and then our proctor Jessica showed us some of the research she has been doing there as part of her thesis.
After that we went to the Mango orchard where they have over one hundred different varieties of mango. Even better a lot of them were fruiting and ready for harvest. We were given samples of over ten different varieties of mango and were also given a bunch of mangos to take home. All of the mango trees there were grafted in order to ensure the right type and breed.
Last thing we did at the place was do some grafting of avocado plants. Each of us were given the chance to do a graft. Pretty much similar to what I did back in Intro to AG except that we used parafilm. That pretty much concluded are visit here.
and on the way home...
