Day 17: EEA Isabela & Unplanned Stop

Today we went to the USDA Tropical Agriculture Research Station at Isabela. The research station is the first Tropical Agriculture Rsearch Station outside of San Juan. This research station holds data since 1930 and was originally started with 60 acres. Now the station has over 400 acres.

The morning was spent getting some hands on experience with fertilizing trees and packaging seeds. The boys did the fertilizing and the girls did the seed packaging. Kind of funny cause it seemed like the seed packing was the harder work even though they worked in a shaded area. Also Foster and I were really lucky because right next to the groves we fertilized was an orchard of lychee. Yummy. Once we were all done doing these activities we headed out for lunch. While the rest of the crew ate at Burger King Foster, Hertin and I spotted a Chinese buffet on the corner and decided to check it out. Best meal so far!!

After lunch, we headed to another part of the station where we had a tour of the place and interviewed one graduate student who was experimenting with bio-controls on watermelon pest. The rest of our time was spent touring the farm. Basically we rode around the place in the air-conditioned van and stopped to look at and learn about the different crops and experiments. We were actually suppose to do more work in the afternoon but we got lucky because the other day someone had already done what was planned for us! This left time for one more activity which I had to beg everyone to go along with! :D

SURF! yup yup. I checked the forecast the day before and Rincon was up again this time even better than before. Somehow I convinced all the interns to go along with it. It was a last minute decision to actually make the stop and it almost didn't go through. I was so stoked that all the other interns and the proctors actually let it happen. The deal was I only stay out in the water for 20 minutes and no more. I have to say that it was the best twenty minutes for me here in Puerto Rico. Once again I had Jonathan Kiyoshi from Saipan manning the camera and documenting the whole thing while I was out! After this I had to conclude that this was the best day for me so far! :D
